Lavrov: Meeting with US President focused on de-escalation zones in Syria

Washington, SANA – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stressed that the talks with the US President Donald Trump focused on the de-escalation zones plan in Syria and the importance of Washington’s support to the cessation of hostilities which serves its interests.

In a press statement following his meeting with President Trump in Washington today, Lavrov said that the two sides underlined the need to continue joint efforts within the framework of Astana meeting and Geneva talks to resolve the crisis in Syria.

He added that the Russian memorandum on establishing de-escalation zones in Syria signed in Astana meeting 4 provides for that all players interested in the matter should agree on a way to guarantee the security inside these zones and the surrounding area.

The Russian diplomat noted that the US could have key role in preserving security inside the de-escalation zones, monitoring cessation of hostilities and handling humanitarian problems there.
