Pushkov: EU Parliament resolution on combating Russian media shows liberal Europe’s weakness

Moscow, SANA –Chairman of the Russian State Duma Committee on International Affairs, Alexei Pushkov, said that the European Parliament’s resolution to counter Russian media outlets is creating a myth about a Russian information threat and shows that western media has lost its monopoly position in the global media space.

“European Parliament’s resolution is showing panic among the biggest part of EU parliamentarians amid the loss of information monopoly, which the western media possessed until recently. This proves that despite talks about freedom of speech and free access to information, the majority of EU parliamentarians are pathologically afraid of information rivalry, and not ready for it,” Sputnik News Agency quoted Pushkov as saying.

Russian President Vladimir Putin commented on the adoption of the resolution by stressing that this resolution indicated apparent degradation of the concept of democracy in the Western society.

On Wednesday, the European Parliament adopted a resolution aimed at combating other countries’ media, including Russia. A total of 691 MPs were present at the session, 304 of whom voted in favor of the resolution, 179 voted against it while 208 abstained from voting.
