Zarif: Russia’s move to reduce its forces in Syria positive sign

Canberra, SANA – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Tuesday that Russia’s move to reduce its forces in Syria should be seen as “a positive sign” for the cessation of hostilities in the country.

Speaking in Canberra during meeting with his Australian counterpart Julie Bishop, Zarif underlined that Iran has always called for a cessation of hostilities, to whose enforcement it contributed, and is now playing a role to reach a political solution in Syria.

“The fact that a ceasefire has been holding in Syria is welcome news” he said.

Zarif said “while the ceasefire did not include ISIS terrorist organization, and the al-Qaeda linked extremist group Jabhat al-Nusra or their collaborators, the international community was united against them.”

“The message that the international community has been sending to ISIS, and should be sending to ISIS and other extremist organizations, is that our fight against them is relentless,” Zarif said.

The Syrian and Russian sides agreed, during a telephone call between President Bashar al-Assad and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Monday to reduce the number of the Russian air forces in Syria.
