Tehran renews support for political solution to crisis in Syria

Tehran, SANA – Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Hossein Jaberi Ansari renewed Monday his country’s support of intra-Syrian talks in Geneva and of a political solution to the crisis in Syria.

Geneva talks were set initially to start Monday 25 January, on the basis of the UN Security Council Resolution 2554, but did not start so far.

Jaberi Ansari told reporters in his weekly briefing that due to insistence of certain countries especially Saudi Arabia, the timetable fixed for intra-Syrian talks between the government and opposing forces was facing problems.

He said these countries including Saudi Arabia were after imposing their own views about which groups were categorized as terrorists.

Jaberi Ansari made it clear that Iran has always stressed that it supports a political solution to Syrian crisis and believed from the very beginning that there was no military solution out the critical situation in the country, “That is why Iran participated in Vienna talks”, he said.

“Iran will continue to play the role of a facilitator and hopes to see a conclusive agreement emerging soon”, the spokesman said .
