Syria, UNICEF to enhance cooperation in education sector

Damascus, SANA – Education Minister Hazwan al-Waz affirmed Thursday that the educational process in Syria didn’t stop in spite of terrorist acts which affected education utilities in the country.

The minister, meeting a delegation of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), led by  Regional director in the Middle East and North Africa Maria Calivis, affirmed the necessity for increasing cooperation between Syria and the international organization.

He said coordination between Syria and UNICEF is continuous to rehabilitate schools, follow up the educational process and deliver school bags and learning requirement to all students.

Nearly 5000 schools have become out of service since the beginning of the crisis due to terrorism, 600 schools are being used as shelters for the displaced and around 17,000 schools host  4,300,000 students all over the country.

The losses in education sector due to terrorist acts hit 170 billion SYP, while 1000 persons were martyred , half of them were children.

For her part, Calivis described cooperation with the education ministry to carry out plans and programs as “good and fruitful,” adding that UNICEF seeks to guarantee all students are joining schools.
