On the World Wildlife Day, the Department of Biodiversity, Land and Reserves at the Ministry of State for Environment Affairs seeks to increase awareness of the benefits of maintaining wild animals and plants on economic, environmental and social levels and bring attention to wildlife crime and illegal trade.
The Ministry has played a key role in protecting wildlife through enacting many laws and legislations to this effect and joining international conventions and protocols that govern the rules and frames of wildlife protection.
Syria is a signatory to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals, Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds and the Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans, in addition to joining Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety and Nagoya-Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety.
During a workshop organized by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) in Dubai, UAE, the Ministry signed a MoU on the protection of sharks and another MoU on the regional project of the protection of migratory birds.
In 2015, the Ministry will be working through the National Environmental Observatory on preparing a detailed study and database of the components of wildlife in nature reserves in Syria.
March 3, 2015 was recently declared by the United Nations as the second annual World Wildlife Day.
