Kurenkov: Russian-Syrian relations are strategic

Moscow, SANA-Russian Minister of Emergency Situations Alexander Kurenkov described his country’s relations with Syria as strategic, noting that his ministry actively contributed to rescue operations and sending humanitarian aid to Syria after it was hit by the devastating earthquake on February 6.

During his meeting with the Syrian Ambassador in Moscow, Dr. Bashar Al-Jaafari, Kurenkov referred to the priorities of the Russian-Syrian bilateral cooperation, indicating that it will be embodied in a number of main directions, including the Russian side’s willingness to train and teach Syrian cadres in Russian institutes and universities concerned with emergency situations.

Kurenkov focused on the need to continue work to establish a legal basis for cooperation between the two sides, pointing out that the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations sent through diplomatic channels a draft memorandum of understanding with the Syrian Ministry of Local Administration and Environment in this regard.

He stressed the need to enhance scientific and technical exchange and learn about the latest technologies that allow the development of expertise on both sides, noting that the Russian side intends soon to transfer equipment and supplies for firefighting and rescue means to Syria.

The Russian minister pointed out that the Russian humanitarian aid to those affected by the earthquake in Syria came under direct orders from Russian President Vladimir Putin, as the Russian rescue teams contributed to reducing the number of victims and providing assistance to the needy.

In turn, Al-Jaafari stressed the importance of Russia’s political, moral and humanitarian role, expressing on behalf of the Syrian government his thanks to Minister Kurenkov and the Ministry of Emergency Situations for all their urgent humanitarian assistance and sending a rescue team to face the repercussions of the earthquake.
