A market for selling rural products in Damascus

Damascus, SANA- The Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform , in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) opened on Saturday a market for selling products of rural families’ projects in Bramkah area, Damascus.

Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform, Eng. Mohammad Hassan Qatana said that the rural markets are linked to production units created, in cooperation with FAO, in production areas where a group of rural families markets their products directly to the markets of the provinces.

He added that the products are from all Syrian provinces to be sold to the consumers at prices set by the producer.

He indicated that the products exhibited are subjected to sanitary control, as a preliminary step before granting their producers accreditation certificates.

The market includes 72 products manufactured by some 400 peasant families and these numbers can be increased daily, a according to the head of the rural development, Raeda Ayoub , pointing out the importance of opening the market in Damascus due to the absence of those products in the capital.

For his part, FAO Chief experts Alfredo Impiglia indicated that the market is a way to support the rural women and encourage them to market their traditional food and textiles products and other ones.

In turn, FAO assistant representative for programs affairs, Haya Abu Assaf clarified that the FAO has trained the rural women on how to establish small production projects and their marketing methods.
