Mikdad: Syria implements all commitments related to setting up a WMD-free zone

Beirut, SANA – Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister Fayssal Mikdad stressed that Syria has always rejected the logic of using weapons of mass destruction “WMD” and considered it as immoral, as it was among the first countries which called for joining the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in 1968.

” Syria has also called for making the Middle East a WMD-free zone in a time when Israel possesses all types of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons and it overtly announces that it will not give them up backed by the US, England, and other Western countries,” Mikdad said in an article published Saturday by Lebanese al-Binaa Newspaper.

He indicated that the WMD possessed by Israel, the US, England and France can destroy the earth in minutes in a time when the representatives of the US announce at the international conferences that they are not responsible for the current wars which are by “chance” taking place in the developing countries, and they call for accounting the officials of these countries.

“Who will account presidents of the US and France for their crimes in Japan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Vietnam, Algeria and Libya?” Mikdad wondered.
In 2003 Syrian proposed a draft resolution on making the Middle East a WMD-free zone, yet the US and the West rejected this initiative, Mikdad said, indicating that the initiative would have led to destroying all mass destruction weapons.

Mikdad added that during the 19th conference of the States Parties of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), some countries alleged that Syria had used the chlorine gas, and later it has been proved that terrorist groups linked to Turkish, Saudi, US and French intelligences used this gas with the aim of distorting the image of the Syrian government and blackmailing it at the regional and international levels.

Mikdad concluded by affirming that Syria will remain resilient in the face of terrorism and implement its commitments with regard for making the Middle East a WMD-free zone, and if the US and its Western allies are serious in freeing the region and the world from these weapons, they must start from themselves.
