Education Minister discusses state of education sector with UNICEF representative

Damascus, SANA – Education Minister Hazwan al-Waz affirmed the government’s commitment to ensure the success and stability of the educational process and to alleviating the effects of the crisis on Syrian children.

Meeting Resident Representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Syria Hana Singer on Tuesday, the Minister reviewed the efforts being exerted to enroll students in schools near their places of residence, to train teaching and administrative staff to provide psychological support to children, and prepare programs to make up for any classes the students have missed due to the current circumstances in the country.

Al-Waz stressed the need to expand cooperation with UNICEF to help students return to school and improve the quality of education, lauding the Fund’s efforts in this regard.

In turn, Singer said that the plans implemented by UNICEF in cooperation with the Education Ministry are proceeding well, particularly in the fields of school clubs, self-education, psychological support, and equipping damaged schools with prefabricated classrooms.

The two sides asserted the importance of cooperation in following up on the situation on the ground to assess the education sector’s needs and meet them according to available resources.
