Al-Jaafari underlies necessity of lifting unilateral coercive economic measures imposed on the Syrian people

New York, SANA- Syria’s Permanent Representative at the UN Bashar al-Jaafari affirmed the need for lifting unilateral coercive economic measures imposed by some countries on the Syrian people.

Al-Jaafari remarks came during a meeting of the Second Committee of the United Nations General Assembly entitled “Unilateral economic measures as a means of political and economic coercion against developing countries” on Thursday.

He said that the Syrian people have been suffering for decades to date the serious repercussions of the unilateral coercive economic measures imposed on them by some governments and these repercussions have reached an unprecedented level in the recent years.

He added that the destructive effects of these repercussions on the economy and development in Syria have accompanied with the repercussions of the terrorist war and with the immoral policies of some governments, which is to hinder the start of the reconstruction process and hinder the return of displaced Syrians to their homeland.

Al-Jaafari said that Syria voted in favor of the draft resolution presented to the meeting as a clear legal and political reflection of the UN stance rejecting unilateral coercive economic measures, which constitute collective punishment of the peoples of some developing countries , undermine the United Nations system ,and impede the achievement of objectives of UN 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.

Al-Jaafari indicated that what we need today are real quick mechanisms to implement the UN recommendations which seek to provide redress for the victims of these measures and to establish an international register of unilateral actions which affect human rights.

He went on by reminding of the briefing of Special Rapporteur on the negative impact of the unilateral coercive measures on the enjoyment of human rights Idriss Jazairy who said “I feel deep concern that the unilateral coercive measures contribute to aggravating the suffering of the Syrian people…In light of what these measures cause of economic and humanitarian suffering, it is difficult to believe the allegations that they are found for protecting the Syrians or to push for achieving the democratic transition.”

Al-Jaafari said that Syria believes that the time has come to put a final end of the policies of economic punishment adopted by some governments of member states.
