Churkin: Reports on ISIS having U.S. weapons show need of coordination with Syrian government

New York, SANA –  Russia’s UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin  stressed that the reports that the terrorist organization of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is in possession of American weapons are not unlikely, saying this shows the necessity for coordination with the Syrian government with regard to fighting ISIS.

In an interview with the Russian ITAR TASS news agency on Tuesday, Churkin said “It is necessary to coordinate activities with the Syrian government more accurately, and in general to act on the basis of the UN Security Council resolutions.”

Earlier, the US Military Command (CENTCOM) for the Middle East and Central Asia announced last Monday that US warplanes carried out airdrops of arms, ammunition and medical supplies to the popular units defending the city of Ayn al-Arab, northern Syria, against ISIS’s attempts to control the city.

Later, U.S. TV channels aired a video in which a terrorist identifying himself as an ISIS member was examining boxes with parachutes fixed to them. The boxes were full of different types of ammunition, including grenades and mines.

In a statement, the American army admitted ISIS is in possession of air-dropped U.S. weapons, claiming that one of the bundles dropped by U.S. forces “had gone astray” during the air drop and was destroyed to prevent it from “falling into enemy hands,” noting that the other bundles were reported to have been “delivered safely.”

For his part, Pentagon spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby said the video could not be verified, noting that the weaponry depicted in the video were the kinds of supplies that were dropped, “so it’s not out of the realm of possibility” that it was one of the bundles.
