Al-Jaafari: some states spend billions of dollars to buy weapons and transport them to terrorists in Syria

New York, SANA- Syria’s Permanent Representative to the UN Dr. Bashar al-Jaafari on Tuesday called for seriously facing the challenge represented in transporting and smuggling small and light weapons to the terrorist groups and organizations, indicating to the involvement of some states in the direct transport of weapons to terrorists in Syria and their spending of billions of dollars on that.

In a statement at the 3rd United Nations Conference to Review Progress Made in the Implementation of the Program of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All its Aspects, al-Jaafari said that the phenomenon of the illicit trade in small and light weapons represents the deteriorating ethical reality of the relations in the world nowadays.

He added that the world today is witnessing the most dangerous phenomenon which is the direct transport of small and light weapons and their ammunition by certain states to the groups which are on the list of the Security Council as terrorist groups.

Al-Jaafari said that this dangerous phenomenon is not only related to the illicit trading in the small and light weapons, but has started to be represented in the direct transport of the certain states’ stocks.

He pointed out that some Arab states such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar are still spending billions of dollars to buy weapons and transport them to the terrorist groups and there are some regional states such as Turkey which is supplying terrorists with all types of care, training, protection and weapons.

Al-Jaafari added that there are some Western states such as the US, France and Britain which have spent billions of dollars to provide all types of weapons and to train and finance terrorists who exist on the Syrian lands including the terrorists of Jabhat al-Nusra and Daesh (ISIS).

He clarified that the Zionist entity is still transporting small and light weapons to the terrorists of Daesh and Jabhat al-Nusra and other terrorist organizations in the disengagement zone in the occupied Syrian Golan.

In his statement, al-Jaafari called upon the member states, particularly those which are involved in smuggling and transporting weapons to the terrorist groups, to shoulder their responsibilities and to completely adhere to the relevant international pacts and to the UN Charter and the international law and to stop smuggling weapons.

He added that the current conference represents an opportunity for handling all aspects of deficiency and the current challenges facing the implementation of the work program and the International Tracing Instrument in a balanced and effective way.

Al-Jaafari said that the concluding document should include a strong and clear language that condemns the double standards and should call upon the aforementioned states to adhere to their commitments according to the work program and the international Tracing Instrument and to cooperate with the other member states in confronting this challenge.
