Mikdad on World Refugee Day: Syria deals with refugees within the humanitarian framework

Damascus, SANA – The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Syria commemorated the World Refugee Day with a festivity held at al-Mashraqa Restaurant in Damascus.

The festivity included various heritage and folkloric shows performed by participants from Arab and foreign states and an exhibition for traditional handicrafts, embroidery items, paintings and photography, in addition to playing musical pieces.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister Fayssal Mikdad said that Syria deals with refugees within the humanitarian framework to provide appropriate assistance and protection that ensure decent life for all.

He added that Syria does not consider the Palestinians as refugees, hoping that they would achieve their ultimate goal in returning to Palestine and establish their independent state.

Mikdad noted that the same is applicable on the Iraqi, Somali and Sudanese brothers.

He hailed the UNHCR efforts in Syria, indicating to close cooperation between the two sides to provide refugees a safe home and a decent quality of life.

In a statement to SANA, UNHCR Representative in Syria Sajjad Malik underlined the Syrian government’s generosity and kindness in dealing with refugees.

Similar festivities were held in Aleppo, Tartous and Qamishli with the participation of refugees from different nationalities.

According to a study by the UNHCR, an unprecedented 65.6 million people around the world have been forced from home, more than half of whom are children.
