Matviyenko: US aggression on Syria violates international law

Moscow, SANA – Chairman of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of Russia Valentina Matviyenko stressed that the US aggression against Syria violates the international law and serves the interests of the terrorist groups.

In a press statement following her talks with Speaker of  the People’s Assembly Hadiyeh Abbas, Matviyenko said that there is no doubt it was an aggressive act against a sovereign state and a blatant violation of the international law, noting that there is no legal basis for it.

She added that Russia insists on conducting an immediate investigation on the alleged chemical attack in Khan Sheikhoun, reiterating her country’s firm stance on the need to unify efforts to combat terrorism in Syria which poses serious threat to the whole world, saying that that Russia will do its best to support the Syrian people.

Matviyenko  pointed out that the Council’s members will adopt a statement condemning the US attack on Syria in tomorrow’s session.

A round of talks was held between the Russian and Syrian delegations with Matviyenko  stressing the importance of this visit in further enhancing parliamentary relations between the two countries.

She affirmed that the crisis in Syria cannot be solved through military means and that political solution and talks are the only way out of it.

Matviyenko  said that Russia will continue to organize visits with European parliamentarians  to Syria to enable them inspect the reality on the ground.

For her part, Abbas said that allegations of chemical weapons use are part of a US play which is based on no evidence, stressing that Syria rejects the use of such weapons which contradict all human values.

She highly appreciated Russia’s support to Syria to confront takfiri terrorism and the war waged on it by terrorists from more than 90 countries as well as its efforts in humanitarian sector and contribution to alleviate the suffering of the Syrian people.

Abbas expressed condolences to victims’ families over the terror attack on St. Petersburg metro train.

The two sides agreed on signing a parliamentary cooperation agreement in the near future to serve the interests of the people in the two countries.
