Churkin: Politicized approach of some Security Council’s member states foiled convergence on future of OPCW-UN Joint Mechanism

New York, SANA- Russia on Monday declared that the Security Council member states failed to reach an agreement over the future of the Joint Mechanism of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and the UN over using chemical weapons in Syria due to the politicized approach of some of the Council’s member states.

Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vitaly Churkin stressed in a statement that discussions showed that a little number of the Council’s member states are ready to hold substantive talks while many others are blinded by the idea of punishing the Syrian Government.

Churkin added that in such politicized circumstances, it is not strange that a convergence in opinions on the future of that Mechanism couldn’t be reached.

On the other hand, he affirmed that Moscow is eagerly waiting for the UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan De Mistura to declare the resumption of the inter-Syrian dialogue in Geneva, stressing that the political means are better for achieving the political settlement.

Churkin added that there is no joint viewpoint at the Security Council regarding the tragedy in Aleppo City, but, he indicated, there is an increasing understanding of the necessity of separating the so-called “moderate opposition” from the terrorists.

He warned that the hostile statements against the Syrian Government which have gradually become against Russia will lead to a blocked road.

The Diplomat added that eliminating the ISIS terrorist organization requires publishing information on those who finance this terrorist organization.

He said that despite the serious military losses inflicted upon the ISIS in Syria and Iraq, yet the ISIS still can spread its influence and carry out terrorist attacks in different parts of the world.
