Homs Governorate discusses with UNMAS cooperation to remove mines from Homs neighborhoods

Homs, SANA- Homs Governor Talal al-Barazi discussed with Agnès Marcaillou, Director of the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) and the accompanying delegation on Wednesday the reality of the humanitarian work in Homs and ways of enhancing cooperation in removing mines and explosive remains left by the armed terrorist organizations in some neighborhoods in the city.

The governor gave an explanation about the infrastructure in the affected neighborhoods in Homs city and the measures taken to secure the return of the displaced people to it, pointing out that the parties concerned seek within the available resources to detect and search for mines and explosive remnants in the areas where the displaced people returned to ensure their safety.

“Many exhibitions and events were held in cooperation with the United Nations Children’s Fund ( UNICEF) to raise awareness on the dangers of mines and explosive remains left by the terrorist organizations in neighborhoods and residential and public areas and to train people on methods and techniques to live and deal with these remains until they are removed”, al-Barazi said.

He explained that locals do not deal directly with these remains but rather they inform the authorities concerned if they come across any strange subject, noting that demining in Palmyra city had been done in cooperation with Russian demining experts.

In turn, Marcaillou said that her first visit to Syria aims at discussing the possibility of providing technical assistance and advice in the field of demining in the affected areas, emphasizing the agency’s readiness to cooperate with the local authorities to train teams of civilians and organizations to develop their abilities to deal with mines and scan places where they can be existed.

The delegation visited some neighborhoods in Homs old city and inspected the devastation that the city suffered due to the terrorist attacks in addition to the rehabilitation works in the city’s commercial center.
