Moscow, SANA – Director of Russia’s State Hermitage Museum, Mikhail Piotrovsky, said that he has submitted to the Russian president Vladimir Putin proposals on restoration works to rehabilitate the ancient city of Palmyra.
In a statement to the Russian News Agency Tass, Piotrovsky said that he presented to the President proposals on possible actions in Palmyra prepared jointly with the Academy of Sciences and the Culture Ministry.
He noted that the possibility of Russia joining the international restoration campaign after securing the city and dismantling landmines was discussed during a phone call with the director of UNESCO, Irina Bokova.
On Tuesday, Russia’s Permanent Representative to UNESCO, Eleonora Mitrofanova, announced that her country has submitted a draft resolution on restoring the ancient city of Palmyra and other archaeological sites.
On March 27th, Units of the Syrian Arab army, supported by Russian and Syrian air forces and popular defense groups, established control on Palmyra and restored security and stability to the ancient city, inflicting heavy losses upon ISIS terrorists in personnel and equipment.
