People’s Assembly discusses performance of Labor and Social Affairs Ministries

Damascus, SANA – The People’s Assembly session held on Tuesday discussed the performance of the Labor and Social Affairs Ministries in light of the current crisis.

The Assembly members touched on a number of issues including setting new mechanisms for employment exams and appointment, dealing with the issue of beggary, setting work plans for civil societies under the supervision of the Social Affairs Ministry.

They also called for reinstating dismissed workers that are proven innocent of the charges that led to their dismissal, speeding up the delivery of aid to the people of Deir Ezzor, increasing compensation for workers with disabilities, providing tenure for contract workers, and increasing the appointment rate of people with special needs and issuing special cards for them to facilitate their affairs.

Responding to the Assembly members’ queries, Social Affairs Minister Rima al-Qadiri said the Ministry is working hard to curb all negative social phenomena including beggary by combining the efforts of the public and civil sectors.

She said the Ministry’s work is focusing on the rights of children and orphans, and that it’s working on a law for regulating NGOs and their work, adding that the Ministry has a plan for looking after the families of martyrs that seeks to empower them by helping them establish small and medium projects.

Al-Qadiri pointed out that the Ministry’s work during the next stage will focus on social development rather than social relief, and that it has presented suggestions addressing some shortcomings in the work of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent which were sent to the Prime Ministry for study.

In turn, Labor Minister Khalaf al-Abdullad said the new workers law will address many issues affecting workers, particularly since it addresses issues that were spawned by the crisis that current legislations can’t deal with.
