Gatilov: Combating terrorism should be priority on negotiating table

Geneva, SANA-Russian deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said on Tuesday that solution to the crisis in Syria requires the beginning of Syrian-Syrian talks without any preconditions.

“Combating terrorism should be a priority for the proposed topics in addition to the humanitarian file and the future constitutional system for Syria,” Russia Today website quoted Gatilov as saying in a press statement.

As for the possibility to fulfill the political process in Syria during the next 6 months, Gatilov added “What is important now is to have tangible outcomes, not deadlines.”

“Syrian opposition is unable to name who will represent it in Geneva as there are two delegations; al-Riyadh group and another which is known as Lausanne group,” Gatilov affirmed.

He said it is difficult to realize a progress in the Syrian settlement without the participation of Kurds, but Turkey opposes their participation, adding “Kurds are important part in the opposition.”

Gatilov affirmed there is no remarkable progress in forming a list of terrorist organizations, saying “we have to admit there are disagreements in this issue with other sides in the international Group for Supporting Syria.”

“There is no agreement about the joining of Jaish al-Islam or Ahrar al-Cham to Geneva talks and we consider them as terrorist organizations,” Gatilov said, pointing out to the importance of “specifying the sides which will be included in the cease-fire in Syria.”

He reiterated Russia’s supporting stance for Syria in combating terrorism, affirming “our stance is very clear; we will continue our support to Syria in combating the terrorist organizations.”
