Norwegian FM: Finding political solution in Syria should be an international priority

Beirut, SANA – Norwegian Foreign Minister Borge Brende affirmed the need to find a political solution to the crisis in Syria soon.

During a press conference with his Lebanese counterpart Gibran Bassil held in Beirut on Tuesday, Brende said this matter should be on top of the priorities list on the international agenda of the UN General Assembly.

He referred to the Norwegian Prime Minister’s call for holding an international meeting for donators this year to help Syria and its neighboring countries, including Lebanon, noting that the countries’ response to the UN calls for humanitarian aid has been less than 40 %, which he said is “unacceptable”.

In turn, Bassil said the current challenges amount to redrawing the region, noting that the choice now is either rebuilding Syria or destroying the region, “which would gradually and inevitably lead to destabilizing Europe.”
