Culture, Information ministers discuss cooperation with UNESCO

Damascus, SANA – Minister of Culture Isam Khalil discussed on Wednesday with Regional Director of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Hamed Al Hammami the threats posed to Syria’s archaeological sites due to terrorist attacks.

The two sides also discussed the role of international organizations in protecting these sites and preventing the smuggling of the artifacts through neighboring countries, in addition to discussing cooperation in the field of training.

In statements after the meeting, Khalil denounced all terrorist attacks on any archeological site, stressing that the UNESCO should exert more efforts to protect the Syrian archeological sites by exerting pressure on international organizations and sides to comply with the Security Council’s resolutions on banning trade in Syrian archeological artifacts.

In turn, Al Hammami stressed that Syria’s cultural heritage is of great value to humanity and the world, and that the UNESCO is keen on preserving and protecting Syrian archeological sites and artifacts.

Meanwhile, Minister of Information Omran al-Zoubi discussed with Hammami means to develop cooperation in training media cadres and raising the level of their vocational skills.
Al-Zoubi expressed satisfaction with the fruitful and positive cooperation with UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, under the current circumstances.

For his part, Dr. al-Hammami stressed the importance of developing the Media Preparation Center institute as a national center, expressing the UNESCO readiness to offer required support for Syrian media outlets through organizing training courses for its media staffs.

In a press statement following the meeting, al-Hammami stressed the necessity of intensifying joint efforts to raise the level of investigative media.

Al-Hammami has been holding a slew of meetings as part of his visit to Syria.

He says UNESCO has a big project to raise the competencies of Syrian establishments in preparation for the stage of restoring stability and security to Syria and rebuilding what has been destroyed by terrorism.
