Hama governor asks FAO to increase support for the agriculture sector

Hama, SANA – Governor of Hama Ghassan Khalaf discussed on Tuesday with Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Representative to Syria Eriko Hibi means to increase the FAO’s support for the agriculture and animal sectors in the province.

Discussions also focused on the need to provide the basic food needs to terrorism-affected residents and people displaced from other province, including students who are studying at Hama University.

Khalaf briefed Hibi on the massive damage caused to the agriculture sector in Hama due to the terrorist acts, with production and investment getting suspended in large swathes of land under the terrorists’ burning and vandalism acts and destruction and looting of equipment.

He asked that the FAO provide help in securing seeds and fertilizers to meet the peasants’ needs and setting up milk manufacturing facilities to help livestock raisers.

The FAO representative said the organization will be helping livestock raisers in providing the medicines and veterinary vaccines necessary for them, in addition to providing seeds, highlighting the special position of Hama coming second after the northeastern Hasaka province in terms of the agricultural importance.

Hibi acknowledged the increasing demand for food supplies in Hama province in light of the displacement movement.

She said the FAO is keen to provide support to all the Syrian areas, noting that the organization has allocated around USD 60 million in aid to secure agricultural equipment in Syria during 2015.
