First day of second round of inter-Syrian talks ends in Moscow

Moscow, SANA-The first day of the second round of inter-Syrian consultative meeting ended in Moscow which included a meeting among the opposition figures who affirmed that talks concentrated on the agenda.

Ala Arfat, one of the participants, said there were a number of topics proposed by the delegations, but the main one centered on the agenda.

“We agreed on a formula, as proposed by the meeting coordinator, to evaluate the current stage, take steps to build confidence between the government and opposition and outline measures that could be adopted to ease the suffering of the Syrian people,” Arafat said.Moscow

He added the agenda of the talks also concentrated on combating terrorism, discussing the political process and other issues related reconciliations and settlements.

Arafat considered that the absence of “the Coalition” representatives in the second round of talks will not affect their outcomes, affirming that the coalition had no intention to attend neither this meeting nor the first round of talks.

For his part, Samir al-Aita said “Today’s meeting brought together new figures like Hassan Abdul-Azim, Mohammad Habash and  Aref Dalila who exchanged viewpoints on the agenda of the meeting.”

“It was better if all have participated,” he added.

Earlier on the day, members of the opposition figures participating in the second round of inter-Syrian talks held meetings at the Russian Foreign Ministry’s guest palace in Moscow following the arrival of the Syrian Arab Republic delegation, headed by Syria’s Permanent Representative at the UN Bashar al-Jaafari, in Moscow.

 

The delegation will participate in the meetings after the conclusion of meetings among opposition figures.

The Russian capital hosted on January 26-29 the first round of talks that brought together representatives of the Syrian government and opposition figures and parties.

The discussions were held in the framework of consultations to prepare for a Syrian- Syrian dialogue to solve the crisis in the country, and ended up with the government’s  delegation and some representatives of the opposition agreeing to a set of guidelines  proposed by Russia.

The guidelines, which were called “Moscow principles,” stressed maintaining Syria’s  sovereignty and unity, fighting terrorism, settling the crisis peacefully and politically, and rejecting any foreign interference.
