Moscow: OPCW members ignoring evidence incriminating terrorist organizations in Syria for use of toxic materials

Moscow, SANA- Russian Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday that some members in the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) are ignoring evidence about using toxic materials by terrorist organizations in Syria and Iraq and leveling unfounded allegations against Damascus.

Russia Today website quoted the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich as saying that members of the OPCW executive council who are relentlessly attacking Damascus in their statements are completely and deliberately ignoring many proofs about using toxic materials by extremist organizations, particularly Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

He pointed out that the executive council of the OPCW in its 78 session, which had concluded recently, indicated that a progress has been achieved in Syria, with only 2% of the chemical materials left undestroyed, in addition to destroying three out of 12 Syrian sites used for producing chemical weapons.

He expressed Moscow’s regret that some members of the OPCW executive council are accusing Damascus of not honoring its commitments about its chemical weapons’ stockpiles, relying on reports of questionable validity published in the international media about using chlorine gas against civilians in Idleb province.

Lukashevich called on the OPCW mission in Syria to investigate information about the involvement of terrorist organizations in using chlorine gas in December 2014 in Damascus.
