Lavrov: Int’l coalition’s reluctance to cooperate with Syria’s government in combating terrorism unconstructive

Moscow, SANA- Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov affirmed that the international coalition’s rejection to cooperate with Syria’s government in combating terrorism is unconstructive, pointing out that combating terrorism should be built on a solid basis of international legitimacy and international institutions, including the United Nations.

During a joint press conference with Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari in Moscow on Thursday, Lavrov said that the coalition’s leaders in the fight against terrorism had adopted unconstructive stance about Syria when they decided not to engage the Syrian armed forces and government.

He blasted the double standers pursued by from some countries against Syria.

“When an agreement about the destruction of chemical weapons had been reached in Syria, no one questioned the legitimacy of the Syrian government and everyone agreed on its legitimacy at the time…but now things had changed,” Lavrov added.

“We exchanged viewpoints about the situation in Syria and Yemen and agreed that it is essential to build a strong foundation to stabilize the situation and reach a solution in both countries,” he said.

For his part, Iraqi Foreign Minister pointed out that viewpoints matched in regards to the solution mechanisms in the region.
