Syria rejects OPCW decision and considers that it violates the UN Charter

Damascus, SANA- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates expressed its rejection of the resolution adopted last Thursday at the 28th session of the Conference of States Parties of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

“This decision represents a deviation from the framework of the agreement that regulates the work of the Organization, and also contains procedures that violate the texts and provisions of International Law and the Charter of the United Nations,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

It considered that “the resolution represents only the isolationist positions of Western countries and not others, and demonstrated that its objective is to achieve what these countries could not achieve through the attacks and failed political campaigns against Syria over the past 12 years, including their support for terrorism and the fabrication of incidents of chemical weapons use that never existed.”.

The Ministry noted that the vote of 69 out of 193 states party to the Convention in favor of the draft resolution exposes the deception of Western countries, and reflects Western hatred against a developing country, and the rejection of the vast majority of states parties to this resolution.

The statement added that Syria holds Western countries responsible for the negative effects that such decisions could have on the present and future of the OPCW.

The Ministry added said Syria urge the Technical Secretariat to adhere to the provisions of the Convention, to carry out a thorough review of its approach and its reports and not to become an instrument serving the objectives and interests of a group of countries, the Ministry concluded its statement.
