Chinese Foeign Ministry: U.S. is ‘Not qualified to play the world police’

Beijing SANA- Xi Jinping’s government slammed the U.S. for imposing sanctions on two senior Chinese officials over alleged human rights abuses in Tibet.

The Chinese foreign ministry on Monday said the U.S. sanctions were illegal and seriously harmed U.S.-China ties, as the government denies accusations that it has used harsh policies to quell ethnic dissent and control religious activities in the region.

“We urge the U.S. side to immediately withdraw the so-called sanctions,” Xinhua quoted Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin as saying, adding that the sanctions were a gross interference in Beijing’s internal affairs.

“The United States has no right to impose sanctions on other countries at every turn and is not qualified to play the world police,” he said, claiming that it was a violation of basic norms of international relations.

The comments come after the U.S. Treasury Department on Friday said it imposed sanctions on Wu Yingjie, the former Communist Party chief of Tibet between 2016 and 2021, and Zhang Hongbo, a senior public security official in the region, for the alleged torture of ethnic Tibetans.
