Ports of Lattakia and Tartous and Banias Oil Drain re-opened after storm-forced closure

Tartous, SANA – The Ports of Lattakia and Tartous were re-opened for navigation Friday morning, three days after they were closed due to a heavy rainstorm that hit the coastal area and, less strongly, other areas across the country.

Ports Director General Maitham al-Youssef announced that besides the two ports, which are located on the Mediterranean Sea, Oil Drain of Banias Refinery was also re-opened.

The storm has started to recede after wind speed had earlier reached 75 km/h and 90 km/h at maximum and wave height had been recorded of 6-7 m, al-Youssef explained.

He stressed that precautionary measures had been taken before the arrival of the storm, which helped avoid any accidents or damages.

Early last month, the Ports of Lattakia and Tartous were closed for three days under the pressure of another rainstorm, whose maximum wind speed amounted to 100 km/h.
