European countries call on their citizens to refrain from fighting in Ukraine

Brussel, SANA- Seven European Union countries have called on their citizens to refrain from engaging as volunteers in the fight on the side of Ukraine against Russia.

The AFP quoted the justice ministers of France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Luxembourg and Belgium as saying in a statement published after a meeting of the (Vendome) group: “We unanimously demand the Europeans not to join the ranks of the volunteer fighters in Ukraine.”

“We, of course, discourage people from going to the battlefield,” French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said after the meeting.

In late February, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky announced the formation of an international legion of mercenaries to support his country’s army against Russia, while the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry stressed that about 20,000 mercenaries, most of them from European countries, had registered to participate in the fight against Russia.

After their arrival in Ukraine, many of these mercenaries expressed their remorse for coming to Ukraine, considering that they had “fallen into a trap.”
