Workshop on human trafficking organised in Damascus

Damascus, SANA-A workshop on “Combating Human Trafficking” which is organized by Ministry of Information, in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) kicked off in Damascus on Monday.

Participants in the workshop stressed the necessity of raising awareness on the topic, underlining the necessity of expanding the knowledge of journalists about the terminology associated with human trafficking to use it in their work.

In a speech to the workshop, Maha al-Ali, an IOM legal expert, elaborated on the Organization’s efforts since 2004 to combat human trafficking crimes and curb their consequences.

She also pointed to the role of media in confronting these crimes and familiarizing the public with their impacts, especially under the current crisis in Syria.

Director of the Information Ministry’s Planning and International Cooperation Department Ammar Ghazali said the Syrian media has been a real partner to governmental and international organizations in their efforts to expose the dangers of human trafficking crimes.

A variety of legal issues pertaining to human trafficking were discussed during the workshop which lasts until Thursday.
