Churkin: Terrorism in ME takes up catastrophic dimensions, coordination needed with Iraq and Syria

 

New York, SANA Russia’s Permanent Representative to UN Vitaly Churkin stressed that terrorists’ crimes in the Middle East region have taken up “catastrophic” dimensions.

Addressing the UN General Assembly in a session on The Situation in the Middle East” in New York on Tuesday, Churkin called upon the international community to intensify efforts in confronting extremism based on the UN Security Council’s resolutions that call for preventing flow of foreign terrorists seeking to join extremist organizations.

He also highlighted the need that these efforts be coordinated with the countries in the region into which those terrorists are given access and that have been fighting terrorism, including the Syrian and Iraqi governments.

Churkin stressed that joint confrontation of terrorism must be a top priority among the topics of dialogue between the Syrian government and the opposition as it would pave the way for further possible development on other key issues to reach a settlement in Syria.

He, in this regard, made it clear that Russian will continue working with all constructive Syrian parties based on Geneva Communiqué of 2012 and the principles of maintaining Syria’s unity, territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the task of combating terrorism and extremism which endanger stability and security in the Middle East and other areas around the world constitutes Moscow ‘s top priority.
