EU: Humanitarian and medical aid allowable even under sanctions

Brussels, SANA_ Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Peter Stano has stressed that humanitarian and medical aid are allowed even under sanctions.

In a statement on Saturday to the Italian Aki News Agency Stano said “in principle, when sanctions are economic and have to do with banning exportation, food and medical aid are exempted and this is applicable to the current situation of Coronavirus outbreak.”

“Companies and concerned parties should be aware of this issue,” he added.

Earlier, Permanent representatives of eight countries to the UN, among them Syria’s Permanent Representative, Bashar al-Jaafari, called for lifting the coercive unilateral measures, indicating that these measures constitute a challenge in facing the crisis caused by the spread of Coronavirus epidemic.

That came in a joint letter addressed by the representatives of Russia, China, Iran, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, in addition to Syria, on behalf of their Foreign Ministers, to the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
