Al-Jaafari: Syria rejects attempt to exploit UN mechanisms to be a pressure tool on certain countries

New York, SANA- Syria’s Permanent Representative to the UN Bashar al-Jaafari affirmed Syria’s rejection of attempts by some countries to exploit UN legal mechanisms to be a tool for political pressure on certain countries.

Al-Jaafari was speaking during an open debate of the Security Council held on Thursday on the role of transitional justice processes in sustaining peace.

He underlined Syria’s rejection of some countries’ negative interference in path of political process in it, imposing economic siege on its people, and impeding reconstruction process in the country.

“Syria affirms that justice has been and will remain the cornerstone recognized by the founders of the United Nations seventy-five years ago in the pursuit of the welfare, well-being and peace of the people of the world without discrimination or selectivity.” al Jaafari said.

Al-Jaafari indicated that Security Council Resolution no.2282 for 2016 stressed the primary responsibility of governments and national authorities in setting priorities, strategies and activities implemented to sustain peace, yet there are governments with political, economic ,and military influence exercise an unprecedented tendency to misinterpret the provisions of the Charter , the rules of work and procedures and violate them in an attempt to impose unilateral views on the UN frameworks aimed at guiding them in paths that serve the ability of these governments to interfere in the affairs of other countries.

Regarding the misleading talk of some UN member states of the so-called international impartial and independent mechanism in Syria (IIIM), al-Jaafari said that Syria reiterates with legal evidences that this mechanism has been and will remain a stark breach of the UN Charter ,as UN General Assembly exceeded its mandate and violated Article no. 12 of the Charter when it targeted the UN Security Council’s mandate and adopted the resolution on setting up (IIIM).

Al-Jaafari went on to say that Syria has not requested any technical assistance from the UN to set up such a mechanism, as it  possesses long-established national legal and judicial institutions and bodies that have the real capacity and will to achieve justice, and accountability away from these blatant interferences.

He renewed Syria’s call for holding UNSC session to consider ways to hold certain governments responsible directly or indirectly for the flow of thousands of foreign terrorists from more than a hundred countries into Syria ,including the European Union , adding that these governments should assume their responsibilities in returning their terrorists who have caused death and destruction in Syria.
