Shulgin: U.S., France and Britain try to distort facts on Douma alleged chemical incident

New York, SANA- Russia’s Permanent Representative to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), Alexander Shulgin affirmed that the U.S., France and Britain are trying to distort facts regarding the allegations on using chemical weapons in Douma City in Damascus Countryside.

During a meeting in New York on Monday, Shulgin said that the OPCW investigations into the use of chemical weapons in Douma city are incomplete and they are riddled with major gaps.

He noted that the conclusions of the OPCW report on the alleged incident contradict with those of the members of the OPCW Fact-Finding Mission (FFM)which visited Syria.

Shulgin added that Russia has submitted its comment on the first report of the organization which was prepared by the specialized committee on March 1st, while Syria has submitted another report to the OPCW General Secretariat, yet the two countries haven’t obtained any reply.

He affirmed that members of the British Working Group on Syria, headed by Prof. Piers Robinson have submitted several requests to the OPCW to make clarifications on the report of March 1st, yet they haven’t obtained any response to their requests.

He added that the Russian side has suggested to the OPCW General Secretariat to announce the results of the report which was submitted by the three independent investigators on Douma incident, but that request was rejected under the pretext of guaranteeing the safety and security of those experts.

Shulgin asserted that the stance of the General Secretariat has raised suspicions to the Russian side and other delegations that the investigations have been used as a pretext to say that there was an aerial bombardment.
