Parliament speaker discusses with Italian, Belarusian lawmakers bilateral relations, war on terrorism

Geneva, SANA- Speaker of the People’s Assembly Mohammad Jihad al-Laham discussed with Pier Ferdinando Casini, president of the Senate Commission of Foreign Affairs, bilateral parliamentary relations and the role of parliamentarians in promoting a language of dialogue and mutual respect among nations.

During his meeting with the Italian senator on the sidelines of the 131st Assembly of the InterParliamentary Union in Geneva, al-Laham stressed the necessity that the efforts of Mediterranean countries’ governments unite for confronting a wave of takfiri terrorism that has rocked the region.

Parliaments have a role in directing executive authorities to beef up control of cross-border terrorism and stem its funding.

He urged Western countries to adopt “balanced policies” towards the Middle East situation and counter-terrorism, warning that Europe will be “among the first to be affected” by cross-border terrorism.

The two sides emphasized during the meeting the importance of continuing parliamentary dialogue with a view to “creating regional legislative environments” that help reduce violence and dry out the sources for terrorism.

Al-Laham held a similar meeting with Chairman of the International Affairs and National Security Commission of the Council of the Republic of Belarus Vladimir Senko, with the two sides discussing means of enhancing parliamentary relations between Syria and Belarus and coordinating stances on the international level vis-à-vis emerging issues.

The talks focused on international terrorism targeting Syria and Iraq which is backed by “well-known parties and governments”, stressing the importance that its fighting be consistent with international law and UN resolutions.
