Midhat Pasha Souq (market) in Damascus- photos

Damascus, SANA- Midhat Pasha Souq (market) in Damascus Old City is the most ancient inhabited street in the world.

The Souq extends over a length of 1600 meters from the area of Bab Sharqi to Bab al-Jabyieh, and it was built after the Roman occupation in 64 B.C.

At that time, it was called “Street of Pillars” and later its name changed to become Midhat Pasha Souq in 1878 when Midhat Pasha during the Ottoman occupation expanded the Souq.

Nowadays, the Souq embraces 850 commercial shops.
