4.0-magnitude earthquake hits southwest Lattakia

Damascus, SANA – An earthquake measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale struck southwest of Lattakia city on the Syrian coast.

The earthquake occurred on Monday at 10:25 am. It was at 35.26 degrees north latitude and 35.62 degrees east longitude at a depth of 5km, according to a statement issued by the National Earthquake Center.

The earthquake took place 25 km offshore between the Syrian and Cyprian shores.

Director of the National Earthquake Center Mohammed Daoud said that the epicenter lies along the line of a fault line that passes south of Cyprus and extends northeast to Iskenderun and the Taurus mountain range, where it is called East Anatolian Fault.
