Al-Jaafari: UN has to shoulder its responsibility in preventing interference in internal affairs of member states

New York, SANA – UN Security Council on Thursday unanimously adopted resolution No. 2171 on preventing conflicts which stipulates for granting the UN Secretary-General more authorities to contain tensions before they are aggravated.

Syria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Dr. Bashar al-Jaafari, said in a speech during the UNSC meeting, “After 100 years since the World War I started, the international relations’ atmosphere does not preach of welfare nor does it show that the countries which got involved in that war have learned anything from that catastrophe; therefore, a more destructive and painful World War II followed the first one.”

Al-Jaafari added that establishing the UN has not, regretfully, led to the aspired goal of its establishment which is saving the upcoming generations from the woes of war.

Syria’s representative pointed out that suffering of peoples has doubled due to the acts of repeated armed aggression and military invasion which have taken place since the World War I until now, including the aggression on Syria, Iraq, Libya, Gaza and others.

He added that as the World War I ended, France and Britain made the agreement of Sykes-Picot which fragmented countries and peoples of the region into regions of influence and occupation paving the way for the issuance of the Balfour Declaration in 1917 which planted the Zionist occupation in the Palestinian territories.

Al-Jaafari added that The SykesPicot Agreement has paved the way for the French occupation to usurp Liwa Iskenderun and give it to Turkey, as a bribe, who still occupies it until today.

He said that events in a number of countries in the region call upon us to reconsider the identity of the beneficiary side from igniting crises.

“Peoples of the region are paying the price now of the US invasion of Iraq in 2003 which depended on unilateral justifications when security council and the UN secretary General refused to approve them… that invasion which caused catastrophes which are well known for all… the Libyan people are also paying the price of the direct military intervention which caused destruction of the country,” al-Jaafari said.

He called on the UN to assume its responsibilities and take a role in the framework of the international law rules, principles of equality in sovereignty and non-intervention in the domestic affairs of member states.
