Damascus, SANA – Health Minister Nizar Yazigi discussed on Wednesday with a delegation from MERCY Malaysia organization the situation of the health sector in Syria and the possibilities of assistance and support in the fields of providing some medicines, medical equipment and restoration of damaged health institutions.
Minister Yazigi called on the delegation to contribute to supporting the Syrian people’s demand to have the Western economic siege on them lifted as it negatively affects the health sector, hailing the support of Malaysia to Syria in various fields.
For his part, head of the delegation Norazam Abu Samah pointed out that the aim of the visit is to inspect the health situation in Syria through a first-hand experience and assess the needs and study the possibilities of assistance.
Abu Samah, who is also the director of strategic planning and operations, said that the organization is concerned with the health fields and it provides assistance such as medicine and medical supplies, in addition to providing help in terms of rehabilitating damaged health institutions in the reconstruction phase.
Following the meeting, the delegation visited the rehabilitation and prosthesis center at Ibn al-Nafees Hospital and the Red Crescent Hospital in Damascus.
MERCY Malaysia was established in 1999. It includes 500 members and about 5000 volunteers. Its main aim is to provide medical and humanitarian services locally and abroad.
