Bangkok, SANA – Syria’s U-16 football team tied with the Qatar team by one goal for each in the Group D qualification matches of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-16 Championship currently being held in Thailand.
Syria’s sole goal was scored by player Abdul Rahman Barakat at the 22 minutes mark while player Khaled Mounir scored Qatar’s only goal at the 60 minutes mark.
The Syrian team kept a strong defensive line till the end while goalkeeper William Ghannam saved a penalty kick at the last minute of the match, maintianing the 1-1 draw with Qatar and reviving the team’s hopes for qualifying to the second round of the championship.
With this result, the Syrian team raised its points to 2, ranking second, while the Iranian team took the lead with 3 points. The Saudi team comes third with one point.
In its first match in Group D, the Syrian team tied 0-0 against the Saudi team. Meanwhile, the Iranian team beat its Qatari counterpart 3-2 in the same group.
The final matches of the Group D will take place on Thursday where Syria will play against Iran and Saudi Arabia will face Qatar.
