Damascus, SANA – The Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) held Thursday a celebration on the occasion of World Humanitarian Day, including several theatrical, artistic and musical shows at the Conferences Hall at Damascus University.
Speaking at the ceremony, Head of SARC, Abdul-Rahman al-Attar, shed light on the organization efforts in the humanitarian field, noting that the organization has offered 53 martyrs since the very beginning of the crisis in Syria.
He appreciated the support provided by the Syrian government which helped the organization deliver aid convoys and distribute them to terrorism-affected people.
Al-Attar hailed the humanitarian role of the UN Resident Representative in Syria Yacoub al-Helo as well as the representatives of other international humanitarian organizations working in Syria to provide assistance and aid to the needy families all over the country.
For his part, al-Helo stressed that the UN will continue its support to humanitarian efforts in Syria, affirming determination to go ahead with this work despite all challenges and risks.
He highlighted the efforts exerted by the Syrian government, SARC and other international organizations to support relief and humanitarian work in Syria.
On December 11th, 2008, the General Assembly of the United Nations’ (UN) adopted a resolution designating the 19th of August as World Humanitarian Day, in commemoration of Canal Hotel bombing in Baghdad in 2003 which claimed the lives of 22 people, including special representative of the UN General Secretary in Iraq Sergio Vieira de Mello.
