Damascus, SANA- Director of the Historical and Archaeological Buildings Department in the General Establishment of Antiquities and Museums Nazir Awad said that the directorate had sent a team including archaeology specialists and experts to Palmyra city to make a preliminary assessment of the situation there in the wake of recapturing the city from ISIS terrorists.

Awad explained in a statement to SANA on Monday that restoration of the damaged ruins in Palmyra needs about five years of work if material support and conditions are provided.

Awad added that the images and information about Palmyra ruins show that more than 80 per cent of them are in good condition, noting that the danger lies in the secret exploration operations carried out by the terrorist organization, stressing at the same time the need for an accurate preview to appraise the effect of the secret exploration on the ruins.

Units of the army in cooperation with the popular defense groups restored security and stability to Palmyra city after eliminating the remaining gatherings of ISIS terrorists in it.
