Anti-Erdogan demonstrations in Istanbul protesting killing of top lawyer in Diyarbakir

Istanbul, SANA- Some 2000 people gathered in central Istanbul, Turkey on Saturday, in protest against the killing of president of the Bar Association in Diyarbakir province Tahir Elci.

The Turkish police fired tear gas and water cannon in an attempt to disperse the angry crowd in Taksim Square and in Diyarbakir where Elci was killed.

Calls were made for the peoples of the main cities of Mersin, Adana, Mardin and Hakkari to organize demonstrations in protest against the killing of Elci, scheduled to be buried Sunday.

Elci died of gunshots to the head after he was targeted, during clashes between Erdogan forces and Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) armedmen, while making a media statement in Diyarbakir province.

Meanwhile, the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) said that the policies of Erdogan and his government through resorting to violence, using hostile discourse and provocative practices and supporting terrorism in Syria are the main reasons for the assassination of the head of the bar association in Diyarbakir.
