Environment Affairs Minister calls for raising environmental awareness

Damascus, SANA – The State Ministry for Environment Affairs held a meeting related to cooperation with the Green Climate Fund (GCF), discussing criteria for choosing which projects to contact the GCF about and procure funding for.

The meeting also tackled the projects for improving air quality and projects proposed by ministries that could be supported by the GCF.

State Minister for Environment Affairs Nazira Serkis said that the GCF supports projects for reducing emissions and for adapting to climate changes and reducing their effects via projects for generating energy, providing low-emission transportation, improving energy efficiency, and managing green areas.

Serkis stressed the need for any development project to be sustainable and to help improve the environmental factors, taking into account its social, health, and economic impact and its role in the reconstruction stage.

She also stressed the need to raise awareness about climate threats, preserving forests due to their role in reducing emissions, and encouraging clean and environment-friendly industries.

The GCF is a fund within the framework of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and it assists in adapting to climate change and mitigating its effects.
