Mikdad calls for deepening cooperation with Iraq to fight ISIS

Damascus, SANA – Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister Fayssal Mikdad said that the Western-backed alliance between Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey has given a boost to terrorists, allowing them to commit more crimes against the Syrian people.

In an interview given to Reuters on Tuesday, Mikdad said that the Syrian Arab Army, with the help of its allies, is capable of achieving victory in the battle against terrorists, asserting that Syria will be able to stand up to terrorist attacks thanks to its army and the support it receives from its allies Russia, Iran, and Hezbollah.

“What makes us optimistic is the increase in the strength and morale of the Syrian Arab Army,” he said, adding that the army’s capabilities are being bolstered by securing “fundamental requirements” for it to carry out its duties.

Mikdad also called for deepening cooperation with Iraq in fighting ISIS which is no small threat, noting that the West had prevented such a thing from happening so far, and that international pressure is still being exerted to prevent this coordination from taking place, adding that more meetings on higher levels are currently being considered, and that the next few days may witness such meetings.

The Deputy Minister voiced hope that relations between Syria and Turkey would improve following the Turkish parliamentary elections which have dealt a blow to the regime of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

He added that Syria hopes that the forces that realized the change in Turkish politics to work towards repairing Syrian-Turkish relations and towards expelling terrorist organizations from Turkey and preventing them from crossing the border between the two countries.
