Ambassador Sabagh: Syria fulfilled its commitments to OPCW

The Hague, SANA- Syrian Arab Republic affirmed that after accessing to the Chemical Weapons’ Convention on September 14th, 2013, it has been able to fulfill a great, important and unprecedented work in the history of the organization which reflected a joint success for Syria and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

“Syria has accomplished all its commitments according to the agreement and resolutions of the OPCW Executive Council away from politicization being practiced by some member countries,” Basam al-Sabagh, Syria’s permanent Envoy to the organization said at a session for the OPCW’s Executive Council.

Ambassador Sabagh said Syria condemns any use of chemical weapons or materials by any side and at any place or time, adding that it also considers any use of these weapons as a violation of the Chemical Weapons’ Convention, yet, Syria has welcomed an initiative to form a fact-finding committee to investigate into allegations of the use of poisonous chemical materials, mainly chlorine gas, in some regions in Syria.

“Syria submitted a number of important documents in December 2014 which confirm that armed terrorist organizations have possessed and used chlorine gas in some Syrian regions,” Sabagh added.

He affirmed that Syria’s accession to the Convention has clearly contributed to approaching an international treaty, saying that achieving the universality of the treaty requires all to intensify the efforts to speeding up Israel’s accession, the only side that didn’t join any treaty regarding non-proliferation of the weapons of mass destruction.

For their part, China and countries of the Non-Aliened Movement, welcomed Syria cooperation in carrying out the resolutions of the Executive Council, particularly the elimination of utilities of producing the Syrian chemical weapons.
