Moscow: Inscribing Odessa on UNESCO World Heritage List politically motivated

Moscow, SANA- Moscow has decried a “politically motivated” decision by UNESCO to add the historic center of Ukraine’s port city of Odessa to its World Heritage List.

“It was prepared hastily, without respecting the current high standards of UNESCO,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

The ministry added, “Western countries have shown once again not only their disregard for the rules of procedure of the World Heritage Committee, but also their willingness to sacrifice UNESCO’s high status and its 1972 Convention for geopolitical interests.”

The only threat to Odessa city with a rich history is the Nazi regime in Ukraine, which is systematically destroying monuments to the great founders of Odessa, Empress Catherine II and her associates, according to the Ministry.
