Russia adheres to “no winners in a nuclear war” principle, Polyansky says

Moscow, SANA- Russia’s Deputy Representative to the UN, Dmitry Polyansky, has affirmed that allegations of using Russian nuclear weapons in Ukraine are baseless and aim to provoke anti-Russian hysteria.

“Such claims are designed for a public that is not familiar with the basics of Russia’s security and defense policy, which is defensive in nature,” RT Today website quoted Polyansky as saying in a meeting of the United Nations Disarmament Commission.

He said “Russia’s use of nuclear potential is possible only in response to the use of nuclear and other types of WMD (weapons of mass destruction) against it and or its allies or in the event of aggression against our country with the use of conventional weapons when the very existence of the state is under threat.”

“These criteria can in no way be applied to the scenario currently unfolding in Ukraine. Moreover, Russia firmly adheres to the principle that there can be no winners in a nuclear war and it must not be unleashed,” added Polyanskiy.
