Mikdad, Pritchard discuss prospects of work on demining in Syria

Damascus, SANA- Foreign and Expatriates Minister, Fayssal Mikdad, discussed on Thursday with Stephen Pritchard, Chief of Programmes, Planning and Management of the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) prospects of work and activity of the department and cooperation in the field of work related to demining for humanitarian purposes in Syria.

Minister Mikdad stressed the importance of supporting national efforts taken by Syria on demining in order to rescue the lives of citizens from the dangerous consequences of mines and explosive devices left by armed terrorist organizations in the areas where they have been existed during the years of war on Syria, as well as enabling the displaced to return to their cities, towns, homes and lands to run their normal life without any risks.

Mikdad said that a national committee on demining has recently been formed, with the aim of facilitating cooperation between the international bodies concerned and the competent national institutions in this field in a way that reflects the extent of the Syrian state’s interest in this humanitarian file.

For his part, Pritchard hailed the cooperation of the Syrian government and the facilities provided by it to make the work of the United Nations Mine Action a success.

He affirmed that UNMAS will do its best to inform donor side about the importance of the humanitarian efforts being made to facilitate the lives of Syrian citizens through clearing areas polluted by explosive devices.
